Mouse
Narrative • USA • 2026
120 Minutes
Synopsis: It’s 2002, and best friends Minnie and Callie are heading into their senior year of high school, with Minnie long living in the protective shadow of the charismatic and admired Callie. When their friendship is suddenly upended at the start of the summer, Minnie struggles to define her own identity and forms a complicated relationship with Callie’s poised, attentive mother, pulling her further from her own chaotic home.
Chicago-based co-directors Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson are back! Together (Kelly writes, and they both direct), they made 2024’s amazing Ghostlight, which premiered at Sundance, played at SXSW, and went on to receive a theatrical release. It’s now available to stream just about everywhere, but I’m still hoping to bring it to town in the new year.
For their newest film, Mouse, they return to those same roles and bring along an incredible cast: Sophie Okonedo, the Oscar-nominated star of Hotel Rwanda; David Hyde Pierce; Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel); and Tara Mallen, who just graced our screens in Winter Hymns and will again in November.
Sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and boasting a 4.0 on Letterboxd, Mouse is especially exciting to me for another reason: this will be only the second time, after Once Upon a Time in Harlem, that I’ve shown a film the same weekend it opens nationwide.
